Welcome to Bank On It
Home for deep-dive thematic research on the financial services sector. Launching in Q4/22.
I’ve been involved in the financial services sector in one way or another for the better part of a decade. I’ve been conducting thorough research on it for 5 years - first independently, then in sell-side equity research, and back again.
Bank On It is what’s missing in financial services research. By subscribing for free you’ll get access to two things:
Thematic research on the sector released ~2 times per month. These long-form pieces are backed by weeks of quantitative and qualitative research. They’re the pieces I’m most passionate about, the ones I wish I could’ve written in sell-side research, and the ones I write to help shape your view of the sector.
Financial services data deck released quarterly. These reports are packed with data and data visualizations that start broad - highlighting key macro and sector data - and then drill down into the industries that make up the financial services sector - providing relevant industry and company-specific data.
Why Bank On It?
I’ve been watching the investment research industry evolve over the years and am confident that the shift to digital is only just beginning. So confident that I’ve made a sizeable financial bet on this trend continuing and on this publication.
However, coverage of the next 100-bagger, mental models for investment success, and anything with “tech” appended to an abbreviation of the industry soon to be usurped by it is not what you’ll find here.
Here’s what makes Bank On It different:
I focus exclusively on the financial services sector, though I may poke around the edges of what that classification encompasses.
My research will always be backed by lots of data. I spend a lot of time and money sourcing and analyzing data to ensure my research is as valuable as possible for you.
I gear my research toward a more sophisticated audience. Though I strive to make my work approachable for all, I write specifically for investment professionals and those in industry.
The thematic research I produce is unique by design - often inspired by something I read, or a trend I saw in the data that I felt needed a closer look. For short-form research and thoughts on recent events check out my Twitter page.
Why Financial Services?
I could write at length about why the industry interests me more than any other, but I’ll keep it to three reasons:
They’re different. Financial services companies are the black sheep of the investable universe. They operate differently, are valued differently, are regulated differently… you get the idea.
They’re everywhere. Financial services companies are often disguised as companies operating in other industries like consumer retail, eCommerce, mining, and more. Prior to working in research I saw this first-hand in the financing division of a Fortune 50 company and the leasing division of a private dealership conglomerate. It’s a fascinating and often misunderstood fact that much of today’s corporate landscape has a hand in the financial services cookie jar.
They’re foundational. Financial services companies are at the bedrock of any developed economy and have connections to just about everything. This allows me to venture outside the traditional definition of the sector in an attempt to discover developments that will make their way back to the sector. It’s this act of flipping stones in anticipation of what’s underneath that I love most about covering financial services.
What’s Next?
I’m beyond excited to kick this off in Q4. I look forward to interacting with, and providing value to you readers.
I would like for this to be a two-sided relationship. So please, don’t hesitate to provide feedback, suggestions for what you’d like to see, and your own research.
